New Student Guide

Once you’re enrolled at SELC you should read and keep a copy of our Pre-arrival information booklet.  Take this with you on your journey to Sydney and SELC!

Also, on you’re first day at SELC you will receive our ‘Welcome to SELC’ Student Handbook.  If you would like you can print a copy for yourself now.

Below is a summary of some key points but there is lots more useful information in these booklets and they will really help you to be prepared for your time in Sydney and at SELC.

How do I get to SELC Bondi?

• SELC is at 19-23 Hollywood Avenue, Bondi Junction
• It is on the corner of Ebley Street and Hollywood Avenue
• From Bondi Junction train and bus station, walk up Bronte Road and turn left on to Ebley Street
• Walk all the way to the end of Ebley Street and turn left on to Hollywood Avenue

Term Start Dates

SELC has term start dates every 4 weeks. On these dates, new students are tested and given an orientation. Classes begin on the second day of the new term.

There are no General English classes on term start dates. Students wishing to study are able to use the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) for their private study. Other courses may run classes on term start dates.

Week 1

Week 2

Thursday/Friday – Individual consultation
SELC offers all students regular counselling sessions with their teachers regarding their individual academic progress and general wellbeing.

Week 3

Friday – EAP Entry Test
Student who wish to change to EAP take an entry test on Friday afternoon week 3.

Week 4

Progress Test for continuing students
Students have a test during the final week of term. The results of this test and the students’ overall performance over the term help to determine if the student is ready to change class, level or course.

Friday -Graduation ceremony for finishing students
This is held in the Level 2 Student Room on the last day of term (generally a Friday). All students finishing their studies at SELC will receive a certificate on this day. After the ceremony, drinks and snacks are served to farewell the leaving students.

How to get to SELC’s new school in the city?

- SELC’s new school is located on level 2 & 6,   56-58 York Street Sydney City, 5 minutes walk from Town Hall or Wynyard station

- On arrival, please come to Level 6 for orientation

What to bring on your first day?

- Your passport and enrolment documents

eg. Letter of Offer

- Pen or Pencil for SELC Placement Test

Your first day—Monday

8:45            Arrive at SELC in the city and go to Level 6

9:00            “Welcome speech” – “Welcome speech” from our Director of Studies

9:20 SELC Placement Test

This is to see what your English level is and helps to determine which class you will join.  The test will take approximately 1.25 hours. During your test you will have an oral interview with one of the teachers.

11:00 “Orientation” meeting where you will receive an information booklet about SELC and learn more about living in Australia.

11:45   Tour of the area around SELC in the city

Your second day—Tuesday

8:50             Come to Level 2 to find your class

9:00             Class begins: You will meet your teacher and other students in your classroom.
