Every Wednesday, students in the General English course do a full-day elective course. This gives you a change from the everyday, and allows you to direct your studies toward your own specific interests or goals. Our electives are offered on a rotating basis.
Levels
- Intermediate and above
Students in General English (Intermediate and above) do a 1-day elective on Wednesdays. You choose your elective course at the beginning of the term.
You can choose to focus on Exam preparation; on improving your listening and speaking, or grammar and writing, or take fun cultural courses which enable you to explore more of Sydney. We also offer specialised courses like Movie-making, Job-finding Skills and Food & Cooking.
1. Listening and Speaking
Forget the textbooks! In this elective you will learn the sort of English native speakers use in everyday situations. The lessons are fun and include movie studies, pronunciation practice, role-plays, study of idioms, talking to native speakers, and lots of discussion and informal chats. It is a great way to improve your listening and casual conversation skills.
2. Grammar & Writing
Choose Grammar and Writing to consolidate your knowledge of English. In this elective we focus on making your English more accurate, so that you feel more confident both when you speak and write.
3. TOEIC / TOEFL Test Preparation
For students who wish to develop the skills and strategies needed to do well in both tests:
* Simulated test practice
* Vocabulary extension
* Reading skills
* Speed reading skills
* Test-specific grammar review
* Computer-based test practice
* Error correction tasks
* Idiomatic language
SELC is an official TOEIC Test Centre
SELC students who wish to sit the TOEIC test can apply directly at SELC. The tests are held every 2 months, with dates advised on our Academic Counselling noticeboard. Find out more about TOEIC here
4. Australian Studies
This elective gives you a chance to experience Australian culture as you learn English. It combines lessons with trips to the most interesting spots around and beyond Sydney. You learn about Aboriginal society, see Australia’s incredible animals, and visit interesting places that a tourist would never find!
7. Job – finding Skills
This elective gives you the skills you need in the order to have success in finding, applying for and getting a job during or after study at SELC. This includes helping you to use the correct English for your resume and application for employment as well as the speaking and listening skills needed for your job interview.
